Spotify Reveals Surprising Gap Between Real Artists and AI Music

Spotify Reveals Surprising Gap Between Real Artists and AI Music

Spotify has initiated a new verification system to help users distinguish human artists from AI-generated music. The "Verified by Spotify" badge will be awarded to artists who prove their authenticity through real-world activities. New Verification System The "Verified by Spotify" badge is designed to allow listeners to easily identify genuine human creators. Artists must show evidence of live performances, merchandise, and active social media presence to qualify, while profiles focused on AI or virtual personas do not qualify. Focus on Consistent Engagement Spotify aims to highlight artists with sustained listener engagement rather than those benefiting from sudden algorithm-driven popularity. The platform believes this approach will strengthen long-term fan relationships. Wider Rollout and Industry Context Initially, more than 99 percent of artist profiles actively searched by users will be verified. The badges are set to appear gradually on profiles and in search results. Not having a badge immediately doesn't preclude future verification. This initiative arises amid rising concerns in the music industry over AI-generated content. Sony Music recently removed over 135,000 AI-generated tracks that imitated its artists, and Deezer reports that AI tracks comprise 44 percent of daily new music uploads. Spotify is also experimenting with new profile features showcasing milestones such as releases and tours, helping listeners connect with artists' real-world activities even before they receive the verification badge.

This feature will showcase an artist’s real-world activity even if they are not yet verified. This initiative comes amid the music industry's challenges with rising AI-generated content, highlighted by Sony Music's recent removal of AI-derived songs and Deezer's report of increasing AI track uploads. Additionally, Spotify is testing tools for artists to manage their profiles better, reflecting efforts to maintain authenticity in the evolving digital music landscape.
