Fugees Star Pras Begins 14-Year Prison Term for Lobbying and Money Laundering
Pras Michel has started serving a 14-year federal prison sentence for an illegal campaign finance scheme. The former Fugees member reported to a correctional facility in Arizona after his conviction earlier this year.
Legal Battle and Conviction
Pras was convicted of multiple charges, including money laundering, witness tampering, and acting as an unregistered foreign agent. His spokesperson, Erica Dumas, stated that they are contesting the charges on appeal, arguing that his rights were violated.
Involvement with Jho Low
Prosecutors accused Pras of funneling funds from Malaysian financier Jho Low into U.S. political campaigns, including efforts related to Barack Obama's 2012 reelection and lobbying during Donald Trump's administration.
Upcoming Appeal
Dumas emphasized that Pras's legal fight is ongoing, with the appeal process in its early stages. She noted that although this is a difficult time for him and his family, they remain committed to challenging the conviction.
Prior to starting his sentence, Pras spent time with family and attended a concert in Los Angeles where Lauryn Hill performed.
