Fugees Star Pras Begins 14-Year Sentence for Foreign Lobbying Scandal

Pras Michel, former member of the Fugees, has begun serving a 14-year federal prison sentence related to an illegal campaign finance scheme. This follows his conviction on charges including money laundering and acting as an unregistered foreign agent.

The Sentencing

On April 30, Pras surrendered at a federal correctional facility in Arizona. His case has drawn significant attention since his conviction in 2023. Erica Dumas, his spokesperson, emphasized that while this is a challenging moment, the legal battle continues.

Legal Challenges

Dumas stated that the charges leading to Pras's conviction are being contested on appeal. She expressed confidence that the appeal process would uncover violations of Pras’s rights and clarify the truth.

The initial accusations involved funneling funds from Malaysian financier Jho Low into U.S. political campaigns, affecting figures like Barack Obama and lobbying during Donald Trump’s presidency.

Before Incarceration

Prior to beginning his sentence, Pras kept a low profile, spending time with family and attending a concert by Lauryn Hill in Los Angeles.
