Spotify Reveals the Growing Divide Between Real Artists and AI
Spotify is introducing a new verification system to help users identify genuine human artists amidst the rise of AI-generated music. The "Verified by Spotify" badge will distinguish authentic creators based on their real-world presence and consistent listener engagement.
New Verification Badge
The "Verified by Spotify" badge aims to assist listeners in recognizing true human creators. To earn this badge, artists must demonstrate their authenticity through live performances, merchandise, and linked social media accounts. Profiles focused on AI-generated content will not qualify for verification.
Focus on Genuine Engagement
Spotify emphasizes sustained audience interest over short-term popularity spikes driven by algorithms. This initiative seeks to reinforce long-term fan relationships with dedicated artists who consistently engage listeners.
Broad Rollout
At launch, over 99% of artists actively searched by users are already verified. Badges will be visible soon on artist profiles and search results, with a more extensive rollout planned. Lack of a badge initially does not exclude future verification.
Spotify is also introducing a profile section that highlights key events such as releases and tours. This feature will showcase an artist’s real-world activity even if they are not yet verified.
This initiative comes amid the music industry's challenges with rising AI-generated content, highlighted by Sony Music's recent removal of AI-derived songs and Deezer's report of increasing AI track uploads.
Additionally, Spotify is testing tools for artists to manage their profiles better, reflecting efforts to maintain authenticity in the evolving digital music landscape.
