Heartbroken Horse Becomes Nurse Mom to Orphaned Colt Arlo

Share Post

Camy, a Thoroughbred mare whose racing career ended before it began, found a new purpose after a series of events. Her story of loss and newfound motherhood with an orphaned colt named Arlo showcases resilience and healing.

A New Beginning at Never Dull Farm

After a trailering accident in 2021, Camy's future seemed uncertain. However, in 2023, she arrived at Never Dull Farm near Rimbey, Alberta, run by Jessica and Stefan Houweling. Here, Camy was introduced as a broodmare for breeding.

In April 2026, Camy gave birth to a filly. Sadly, the foal was born sleeping. Despite this tragedy, Camy was soon cleared to become a nurse mare.

Uniting with Arlo

Within 48 hours of the loss, Never Dull Farm learned of Arlo, a local colt who had lost his mother due to complications at birth. A TikTok video showed how quickly Camy bonded with him.

The farm described the process as both heartwarming and therapeutic for everyone involved. The swift connection between Camy and Arlo offered solace and healing.

Understanding Grafting

Grafting involves having a mare that is not related accept and nurse an orphaned foal as her own. This practice helped unite Camy and Arlo. Their immediate bond provided both horses with comfort and companionship moving forward.

Camy's story is one of finding hope in the face of adversity for both herself and the young colt Arlo.
