Heartwarming: Grieving Horse Camy Becomes Nurse Mom to Orphaned Colt Arlo

Share Post

The story of Camy, a Thoroughbred mare, finds hope and healing after she becomes a surrogate mother to a colt named Arlo. Despite suffering from a career-ending injury, Camy found her purpose at Never Dull Farm.

Camy's Journey to Never Dull Farm

Born in 2017, Camy's racing aspirations were cut short due to an accident in 2021. However, she arrived at Never Dull Farm in Alberta, Canada, in 2023 as a broodmare prospect run by Jessica and Stefan Houweling.

While Camy was pregnant with an Irish Draught foal due in 2026, tragedy struck on April 17 when the foal was born asleep.

Finding a New Purpose

Despite the devastating loss, Camy quickly embraced her new role as a nurse mare. Within two days, she met Arlo, a colt who had lost his mother to complications during birth.

A TikTok video captured this touching encounter with the stranger bringing Arlo to meet Camy. The farm noted that she became immediately attached to him.

The Process of Grafting

The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine describes grafting as having an unrelated mare accept and nurture an orphaned foal. It was through this process that Camy and Arlo were brought together.

This unexpected connection provided both animals with companionship and solace, turning their individual tragedies into a shared journey of healing and belonging.
