Share Post

Fernando Mendoza, a Heisman Trophy winner, has chosen not to attend the 2026 NFL Draft in person, opting instead for a family-focused celebration at home.

Mendoza revealed on ESPN's The Rich Eisen Show that his decision was influenced by his mother's preference to celebrate at home. His mother, Elsa, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007 and uses a wheelchair, making travel more challenging.

Family Celebrations

The draft event will take place at Pittsburgh's Acrisure Stadium. However, Fernando plans to watch from Miami with family and friends, accompanied by Cuban food. He shared on the Up & Adams show that they plan to roast an entire pig for the occasion.

Mendoza's motivation for staying home includes sharing this significant moment with those who have supported him throughout his football journey. He emphasized the importance of memories made among mentors, coaches, family, and friends.

A Mother's Influence

Fernando has often spoken about how crucial his mother’s support has been during his career. She attended the national championship game where he led the Indiana Hoosiers to victory. He expressed deep gratitude for her influence and inspiration in his life.

Speaking at a press conference before the championship game, Mendoza described his mother as his "why," explaining how her strength against adversity inspires him daily.
