Heisman Winner Fernando Mendoza Skips NFL Draft—Here's Why

Share Post

Fernando Mendoza, winner of the Heisman Trophy, has chosen to attend the 2026 NFL Draft from home rather than traveling to Pittsburgh for personal reasons involving his family.

Mendoza revealed on The Rich Eisen Show that he and his parents preferred to experience the draft at home due to their family situation. His mother, Elsa, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007 and now uses a wheelchair.

Family Priorities

Mendoza emphasized wanting to share the draft moment with his entire support system, including mentors and friends, rather than limiting attendees if they had traveled to Pittsburgh.

The draft is taking place at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, but Fernando plans a celebration in Miami complete with Cuban cuisine. He mentioned plans for a pig roast similar to one enjoyed by his teammates earlier in the year.

Supportive Family

Fernando often credits his mother as a significant source of inspiration throughout his football career. During a press conference before the national championship game, he spoke about her influence and optimism despite her health challenges.

He expressed gratitude for her role in his life and described her as a great role model and motivator for both him and their family.
