Activist's Lobster Rescue Turns Awkward After Surprising Discovery
An animal activist admitted in court to removing a lobster from a restaurant tank and throwing it into a harbor, claiming it was a rescue attempt.
Emma Smart confessed to causing criminal damage after taking a lobster from The Catch at the Old Fish Market on April 10. The restaurant’s owner stated that the establishment kept two lobsters, Reggie and Ronnie, in the tank for educational purposes.
Lobster Reportedly Died After Being Released
Court records indicate Smart believed the lobster would be cooked and threw it into a nearby harbor. Authorities think the lobster died due to exposure to colder water, being accustomed to the warmer tank environment.
The second lobster allegedly died soon after, with stress and isolation suggested as possible reasons.
Court Issues Restraining Order
Smart appeared in court, admitted to criminal damage, and received a three-year restraining order barring her from approaching the restaurant.
The case has gained attention for its unusual nature, as an intended rescue led to the loss of both lobsters, which were significant to the restaurant’s identity.
