Man Arrested Linked to Weapon in Tragic Louisiana Child Deaths
A 56-year-old man from Shreveport, Charles Ford, was arrested in connection with a mass shooting carried out by Shamar Elkins. Ford previously owned the assault-style gun used in the attack, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana. Elkins' actions resulted in the deaths of his seven children and Pugh’s nephew.
Gun Ownership and Allegations
Ford claims that Shamar Elkins stole the gun from his truck prior to the shooting. He confronted Elkins when he noticed the weapon missing but did not pursue the issue further after Elkins became defensive.
The U.S. Attorney's Office stated that Charles Ford, a felon, falsely informed investigators about his possession of the firearm initially but later admitted to owning it.
Legal Proceedings and Community Impact
Ford is charged due to his status as a felon in possession of a firearm and making false statements to federal agents. He may be represented by a federal public defender in court. Ford expressed hope that prosecuting him might offer some solace to the community.
Shooting Details and Aftermath
Shamar Elkins died following a police pursuit after fleeing his wife's home where some of the crimes occurred. It remains unclear if he died from police or self-inflicted gunfire. Victims include Shaneiqua Pugh, Elkins' wife, and Christina Snow, believed to be his girlfriend, both suffering injuries alongside others affected by the rampage.
The attack resulted in multiple fatalities, including three boys and four other children related to Elkins. The violence unfolded before dawn across two residences.
Elkins had previously pleaded guilty in 2019 to illegal use of weapons and adhered to probation conditions which involved relinquishing his handgun then.
