Michael Tilson Thomas died of Glioblastoma Multiforme, a type of aggressive brain cancer, on Wednesday. News of his passing was shared via his Instagram account, which included a touching tribute highlighting his dedication to music despite his illness.
A Legacy in Music
In 1987, he co-founded the New World Symphony in Miami Beach to support upcoming musicians. The program has mentored over 1,000 artists, many of whom joined the San Francisco Symphony.
Michael served as principal conductor for the London Symphony Orchestra from 1988 to 1995. In April 2005, he conducted "The Thomashefskys: Music and Memories of a Life in the Yiddish Theater" at Carnegie Hall in honor of his grandparents.
